Letterpress printing is credited with being one of the most significant developments of the last millennium. In the 1430’s, Johann Gutenberg invented the first printing press, with his most famous printed piece being the Gutenberg Bible. He was able to mass produce identical copies of the over 1200 page book with colour. Not an easy task without the printing press. Although he may have put thousands of scribes out of business, as the first widely used printing method, his invention helped give birth to the age of enlightenment. It opened the world of letters and books to more than just the very wealthy and clergy. With the mass production of the printed word, the common man could now learn to read and write, to gain knowledge and to even organize rebellion.

Letterpress has a very distinct and recognizable style.
A raised form, made from metal, wood or plastic is inked with a roller and then actually pressed into the paper. When done skillfully, it has an authenticity and tactile quality that is lacking in more modern printing techniques.
